Ann Sainsbury
"He said: Call me Bob"

I’ve experienced some exhilarating high altitude trekking to Everest while visiting one of the most exciting and spectacular places in the world. The Three High Passes trek gave me a chance to trek off the beaten track, away from the usual Everest Base Camp trekking routes.

One of the appeals of Everest trekking is the democracy of the trail. Every one you meet, be they celebrity mountain climber or trekker, is there with a common goal – to enjoy the mountains.

A well-known face I encountered was the friendly Robert Redford. ‘Call me Bob,’ he told me. He was trekking to Everest Base Camp in a very low key way, and enjoying a hot-lemon with other trekkers in the local teahouse.

A local celebrity I got to know in the 70s was the veteran Swiss pilot, Emil Wick. He holds the record for the highest landing and takeoff ever made. Emil was my pilot many times for the spectacular flight into Lukla Airport, and he liked to do something unexpected to add to the thrill of approaching Everest Base Camp.

If that’s not enough celebrity spotting for you, I met Sir Edmund Hillary waiting for the plane at Lukla Airstrip!

Three High Passes to Everest

The ultimate high-altitude Everest trekking itinerary includes a series of challenging high level treks taking in views of Everest Base camp and the most spectacular scenery Everest trekking can provide.

The Everest trekking route we take has vantage points for seeing the summits of Cho Oyo, Cholatse and the mighty Mount Everest. Trekking this way, we are unlikely to come across many other travellers so you can claim the views as your own.

This tough but rewarding version of Everest Base Camp trekking will push you to the summits of Gokyo Ri and Kala Patar and then to the visual highlight of the trip, the Cho La pass, a snow covered link between valleys with breathtaking views of the range. At the end of this strenuous and uplifting journey, trekking on to Everest Base camp is optional.
