Steve Berry
"The bank manager who restored my faith in human nature"

I trekked the Pioneers Trail to Everest Base Camp to help acclimatise for a mountaineering expedition in 1984.

A funny thing happened when the Sirdar Sherpa and I went to the bank in Namche Bazaar for some change.

We were treated like honoured guests and, eventually the bank manager presented us with several boxes of small denomination notes which we used to pay the porters for the Everest Base Camp trek. After our bank visit I noticed that I was a little short of cash, but I put it out of my mind and enjoyed a pretty raucous evening drinking chang (local beer) late into the night at the house of the Head Sherpa.

Early the next morning the bank manager surprised us by showing up at the house. Apologising abundantly, he put several thousand more Rupees into my hand. This simple act of integrity in a remote part of the Nepalese Himalaya did wonders for restoring my faith in human nature – and bank managers!

I have to say this Everest trekking holiday was fantastic. The high passes and deep valleys between Jiri and Lukla are quite a challenge, but worth it for the pretty scenery, friendly people, and the delightful tea-stops along the way.

Pioneers Trail to Everest Base Camp

This is a much longer and fuller Everest trekking holiday experience that lasts nearly a month with twenty three days on the Everest Base Camp Trek. This extra time permits trekkers to acclimatise at a steadier pace and take the ascents more gradually.

Instead of taking the plane into Lukla, the route is extended to approach through the beautiful Dudh Kosi valley before climbing gradually on the way to Everest Base Camp.

But this is also an Everest trekking holiday with the local community in mind. As part of the Everest Base camp trek, you will visit projects like hospitals and schools which were brought into being with the help of the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust.
